What is the Traders Scheme?

Many older people have difficulty in locating a reliable and safe trades-person to undertake basic tasks around the home.

This includes things such as a plumber to mend a leaky tap, or a decorator who is willing to take on a small job. People also experience problems finding personal services such as mobile hairdressers cleaners or gardeners. Sometimes, all people want is to know that they can trust the person doing the job.

Age UK Wiltshire and Wiltshire Trading Standards have set the scheme up so that people can have the reassurance that basic checks have been carried out on the traders.

All the traders listed have confirmed that they hold public liability insurance and Age UK Wiltshire has received two references from people who have used their services.

Other than this neither Age UK Wiltshire nor Wiltshire Trading Standards are able to recommend their work.  It is also essential that you understand that the scheme does not promise:

• someone to manage, oversee or inspect your project
• cheaper or discounted work
• that unreasonable demands will be met
• that you will encounter no problems

People using this scheme should contact traders themselves and deal with all necessary arrangements. Further information about this is available in the document "Understanding Your Contract for Work", which we recommend you read, is attached.

What the scheme aims to do

• Provide a source of competent local traders people who are willing to do a job for a fair price.

• Help older people to remain independent for as long as possible.

• Give wide publicity to the scheme members at every opportunity.

• Raise awareness of the availability of consumer advice through Trading Standards.

• Marginalize those less willing to trade in a lawful and ethical way.

• Provide the means for the scheme members to influence the development and implementation of the scheme.
